Working at FEE: Communications intern Marcela Díaz
Finnish Education Employer’s new communications intern, Marcela Díaz, shares her journey to studying in Finland and what she’s most excited to learn during her internship.
Tell us about yourself and your internship. What does your internship involve?
My name is Marcela Díaz. I’m 24 years old, and I come from Honduras. I grew up in Santa Rosa de Copán, a city 400 kilometres west of the capital city, Tegucigalpa. I started my studies at the University of Helsinki last autumn.
I’m a communications intern at Finnish Education Employers and will be working on producing English content, especially video content, among other communications tasks.
What have you studied and where?
I went to primary and high school in my hometown. After that, I moved to the capital to pursue a bachelor’s degree in diplomacy. But then COVID happened, and I moved back home in 2020. I finished my studies online in December 2022 and started working for the International Organisation for Migrations in the communications department. I started as an intern and gradually worked my way up until I was a full staff member.
I still wanted to pursue a master’s degree, so I applied for different programs in Europe and ultimately got in to study at the University of Helsinki in the Global Politics and Communications program. I’m very grateful that I was accepted to the program. My brother works and lives in Turku, so I can feel that I have a support network even though I’m far from home.
What do you hope to learn during this internship?
I’m looking forward to learning more about the Finnish working life and the education system. I have experience working back in Honduras, so it will be interesting to learn about the differences and similarities. I’m also eager to develop my skills in creating English content and, of course, getting to know everyone at Finnish Education Employers!
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy working out at the gym and listening to music. I’m really into K-pop and reggaeton, but I listen to all kinds of music from the 60s to contemporary music.
Do you have a motto or life philosophy?
Adaptation and learning are key. Back home, I knew everything about the culture there and how things work, and now it’s all new and different. However, it’s okay not to know and to be in the process of learning and making mistakes. I don’t need to be perfect.
